Bernard Charles Bentley
1916-1996
Bernard Bentley was educated at the Colchester Royal Grammar School and
subsequently became articled to his father Albert. His studies were interrupted
by the outbreak of the Second World War during which he served in the
Essex Yeomanry. Returning from India after the war, he resumed his studies
in
London and after qualifying as a Solicitor, quickly became a partner
specialising in conveyancing and wills, and the name of the firm Goodys,
Sons and Weatherall
was changed to Goodys, Bentley & Son. A keen sportsman all his life,
Bernard moved on from rugby and cricket in his late thirties to become
an avid golfer. Bernard married in 1943 and had two daughters. |

Albert Charles Bentley
1884-1961
After graduating from the Wesleyan School in Colchester, Albert Bentley,
joined the firm of Goodys, Sons and Weatherall at 62 North Hill, as a clerk.
After an interruption for post World War 1 duties in the Pay Corps (his
eyesight having precluded him from serving during the war), he enrolled
in the Halifax Law Society classes, qualified as a Solicitor and became
a salaried partner with Mr Clifford Goody. Upon the death of Mr Goody,
Albert took over the firm and remained the Senior Partner until his death
in 1961. He spent his life in Colchester, was married with a daughter and
a son, the latter following him into the firm. |
