Credit crunch increases demand for divorce advice

A LEADING local law firm is launching a new Saturday clinic to meet the growing demand for legal advice from people considering a divorce or separation as a result of the pressures created by the credit crunch.

Goody Burrett LLP, which has offices in Colchester and Dunmow, has witnessed a 20 per cent increase in the number of people seeking advice on divorce during the past three months and has expanded its matrimonial department as a result.

Head of the department, Lauren Sadler, said: .The credit crunch unfortunately not only puts family finances under pressure, it sadly also places relationships under enormous strain. We encourage clients to consider relationship counselling whenever it appears the relationship can get back on track. However, it is important that those in a relationship facing the possibility of separation be given expert advice about their legal rights and obligations concerning financial and children issues before making such a life-changing decision about whether to end a relationship.

.It is too soon to say whether divorce rates will increase as a result of the credit crunch but certainly a lot more people are seeking advice..

Starting from November 8, the firm will now open its doors every Saturday between 9.30am and 1pm at its offices in St Martin.s House, West Stockwell Street, Colchester and Clifford House, High Street, Dunmow.

Miss Sadler added: .The department has recently expanded following the appointment of a newly qualified solicitor, Sarah Dowie, which brings our matrimonial team up to seven.

.By opening Saturdays, we have listened to our clients who need access to advice when it is more convenient for them. The last thing people want to do in the current economic climate is ask for time off work to see a solicitor..

In addition to advice about family law issues, the Saturday clinic will also be open for advice on other areas of law including civil litigation, buying and selling properties and wills.

Goody Burrett is one of the oldest law firms in Colchester and was recently awarded Lexcel, the Law Society quality mark.
