There have been renewed calls for unmarried partners to be given the same legal rights as married couples in the event of a relationship breakdown. Sir Nicholas Wall, President of the High Court Family Division, has said that the current rules disadvantage unmarried women in particular where they have been living with their partner for a long time.

It is often wrongly assumed by cohabitees that they have the same legal rights as they are .Common Law Spouses.. However this is not the case and it is advisable for anyone considering moving in with their partner to seek legal advice to ensure that they are protected.
